CIAA FOOTBALL WEEK #4

The first week of conference play in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) opened with a few fireworks.

Fayetteville State (1-3, 1-0 CIAA) traveled to Petersburg, Va. and defeated the CIAA Defending Champs 33-20 on national television for its first win of the season. During the NCAA Game of the Week broadcast, FSU’s Derek Bryant completed 28-of-39 passes for 430 yards over Virginia State (2-2, 0-1 CIAA).

Bowie State (3-1, 1-0 CIAA) almost amassed 500 yards of total offense in its home opener against Livingstone (1-1, 0-1 CIAA). Three-time CIAA Quarterback of the Week Matt Goggans completed 19-of-43 passes for 345 yards and four touchdowns. Livingstone’s quarterback Drew Powell gained 354 yards of offense. He completed 22-of-49 passes for 224 yards and rushed 22 times for 130 yards.

virginiaUnion-defeatJCSUVirginia Union (3-1, 1-0 CIAA) defeated Johnson C. Smith (1-3, 0-1 CIAA) 33-3. Shawheem Dowdy threw for 263 yards on 17-of-25 completions and two touchdowns for the Panthers.

Lincoln (Pa.) managed a struggling Shaw (0-4, 0-1), 20-10. The Lions (3-1, 1-0 CIAA) captured its first conference victory since defeating the Golden Bulls (55-53) in 2012. Lincoln’s last victory over Shaw dates back to 1954. Stephen Scott continues to lead the conference in rushing with a 123-yard performance and one touchdown.

Chowan (3-1, 1-0) had another stellar weekend after defeating Saint Augustine’s 49-0. Tyree Lee carried the ball for 223 yards on 36 carries for the Hawks. The Falcons fall to 0-4 on the season and 0-1 in the league.

Winston-Salem State had the most emotional victory over the weekend. Dedicating the game to injured teammate, #28 Marquise Gaddy, and receiving a pep talk via FaceTime during pregame, the Rams (1-3, 1-0 CIAA) captured the 18th Down East Viking Footbal Classic over Elizabeth City, 17-10. The Rams’ Rashad Cooper threw for 199 yards and two touchdowns with 10-of-23 completions. The Vikings’ Stephen Williams led the conference with 16 total tackles over the weekend.
