Charlotte, N.C. (Feb. 10, 2016) – Members of the Johnson C. Smith University Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) recently assisted Loaves and Fishes as well as the Boy Scouts of America collect and stock donated food as part of the Scouting For Food drive on Sunday, Feb. 7.Members of the JCSU men’s basketball team, softball team, football team, women’s track and field, and volleyball teams helped in the effort by sorting and loading the donated canned goods that will be delivered to Loaves and Fishes, a local food pantry.

Scouting for Food is a national program initiated by the Boy Scouts of America and helps fill food pantries all over the country.  The scouts distributed bags earlier in the week and the donations were brought to nine locations throughout Mecklenburg County.  Volunteers at those locations help the Scouts sort the food and they are packed into large bins and delivered to the food pantries for distribution to those in need.

It is expected that nearly 12,000 Mecklenburg County residents will lose or will have their SNAP benefits greatly reduced, which is expected to create a large number of new clients for the area’s food pantries.
