JCSU Women’s Basketball Rolls to 76-62 Win at St. Augustine’s

headshot_2_Ashley PorterThe Johnson C. Smith University women’s basketball team forced St. Augustine’s into 30 turnovers and shot 40% from the field en route to an easy 76-62 CIAA Southern Division road win at Emery Gym on Wednesday evening.

JCSU got a team-high 15 points and 10 points from senior Ashley Porter (Winston-Salem, N.C.).  Porter finished the night shooting 6-of-13 from the field in the win.  Freshman teammate A’Diyah Ussery (Shelby, N.C.) completed the game with 14 points, including a perfect 4-of-4 from the free throw line.  Ussery also nailed two three pointers in the win.

In the first quarter, the Golden Bulls managed to jump up on the Falcons quickly thanks to baskets from Porter and Hall.  Hall also added a free throw at the 8:10 mark to stake JCSU to the 5-0 lead.  After St. Augustine’s cut it to 5-3, JCSU extended their lead to eight points (15-7) at the 2:49 mark after
JeKeyah McNeil (Fayetteville, N.C.) connected on a layup.

After leading 17-10 after the first quarter, JCSU kept the pressure on SAU, building the lead to as many as 16 points (35-19) late the in quarter and took a 36-22 lead in the halftime break.

In the third quarter, St. Augustine’s chipped away at the JCSU lead, closing to within 10 points at 55-45 after Sycora Dorsey drove and made the basket in traffic, earning a foul.  Her free throw brought SAU to within 55-46 with 45 seconds left.  On the next JCSU possession, Usury earned a trip to the line, canning two free throws to build the lead back to 57-46.  After an Asha Jordan (Monroe, N.C.) layup made it 59-46, the Falcons got a free throw with 6.8 seconds left to bring the score 59-47 at the end of the quarter.

In the fourth quarter JCSU kept a double-digit lead throughout, with SAU closing to 61-50 with 8:24 left, but they could get no closer as JCSU jumped ahead by 17 points at 67-50 with 6:21 left.  SAU would never threated again as JCSU took the 76-62 win.

The win improves JCSU to 14-10 overall, 7-6 in CIAA play and 3-4 in the Southern Division.

The Golden Bulls will travel to rival Livingstone on Saturday, Feb. 13 for a 2:00 p.m. tipoff with the Blue Bears.
