Volleyball Falls on Senior Night

Box Score Charlotte, N.C. (Oct.. 28, 2015) – The Johnson C. Smith University volleyball team won the first set, taking a 1-0 lead over visiting Benedict, but the Tigers stormed back to take a 3-1 (25-16, 20-25, 19-25, 20-25) win over JCSU on senior night.

In the first set, JCSU (3-16) lead throughout, bolting to a 13-8 lead.  The JCSU lead would then balloon to 15-9 following a kill from senior Salesse Stovall (Roanoke, Va.).  The Golden Bulls would increase the lead to 23-15 on a Gracyn Doctor (Charleston, S.C.) kill.  Doctor would close out the set on a kill, giving the Golden Bulls the 25-16 win.

Benedict roared back in set two, building a steady lead that got to as many as six at 19-13, forcing a JCSU timeout.  The Golden Bulls would fight back to close the gap to 21-20, but a 4-0 run from Benedict provided the 25-20 set two final.

Benedict lead wire-to-wire in the third set, jumping to a 20-11 lead before the Golden Bulls attempted a comeback.  JCSU was able to claw back to within 23-15, but Benedict took the third set 25-19.

The Tigers again built a steady lead in set four, jumping out to9-4 lead.  That cushion would quickly evaporate when JCSU got to within 12-9 after a kill from Jana Ajdukovic (Zagreb, Croatia).  Benedict would extend their lead to 19-12 and would allow JCSU to get to within three points at 23-20 but a kill and a JCSU attack error provided the final two points.

Senior Gracyn Doctor turned in a doule-double with 12 kills and 11 digs on the night while fellow senior  Khadijah Segura (Minneapolis, Minn.) had 29 asssts.  Sophomore Makayla Adams (Michigan City, Ind.) had eight kills while Ajdukovic, Anteesha Smoots (San Antonio, Tex.) and Stovall all finished with four kills.
